Whats the gear to have nowadays?Hello everyone, first visit for some time now, car has lots of dust collecting on it. All cleaning and serviced now, and showing some interest once again after a break. Been desperatley trying to get some life back into my old Ni-MH cells, one pack seems to ok, but the others dont seem to hold a charge and have now guts to them!, even after several cycles using a Novak Smart Tray.
So its not really a case of charging up the cells and go racing again, I will need to spend some cash .
Here come the questions:-
So are we all using lipo cells now at the club?, also are you running 19t or the majority using mod? in Brushless form?
Am I right in thinking that if i go the lipo brushless route I will need a new speed controller and charger?, how many lipo cells do you need for a days racing?.

well lipo's are being used more now then cells at club level more for the facts that they dont need as much maintance as cells. A good lipo pack will last for around 1 year with no drop off in performace.
With new lipos coming to the forfront of technolgy they have increased from 20C to 35C which is the current draw from the pack i.e. higher the number the more amps the pack will deliver
You wont need to get a new speed controller if you change to lipo but you will need a lipo charger this is very important as they charger completely the oposite to cells in respects to amps
cells will peak towards the end of the charge and lipos will decease in amps towards the end of the charge.
A lot of members run 10.5 brushless which is the same as 19t brushed. and around colchester there is not much between a 10.5 or a mod brushless !
hope this gives you the aspects to get the car on the track and racing with us lot

Blimey Daz,your still alive.Good to hear from you.
I'm afraid things have moved on more in the last year than in the last 10.
If your going to stay electric then 99% of people have gone Lipo and Brushless.Once you've tried them its just sooooo much easier.
Probably best to give the 'scooby' a trip up the track next sunday and come see us,much easier to explain than typing it all out on here.
Basically though i reckon 2 x Lipo's,lipo charger and a brushless esc+motor. If you want i can send you a pm with some links to what i'd suggest.
Or you could go nitro?

Thanks for the replies as far!. I was planning on coming up today but it was Pi**ing down, so figured you wouldnt be racing anyways (plus i'd get my scooby dirty ). I'll try next week then, then you can try and get it in my head whats what, so hold off on the pm with all the links for now.
Nitro tho, not sure yet, think Im an electric person deep down, but I guess you've all said that once aye!.

Think the best way to go is LiPo and 6.5 brushless
it means ur cell doesnt need to be a 35c or watever as the motor will only thermal cut once you put too much through it anyway
anythin above a 6.5 isnt really easy to control with a LiPo and will draw too much for you to get away with one battery pack
you wont get a competitive 10.5 (19t equivalent) for less than modified brushless motor prices anyway
I'd suggest using the same equipment as me just cos it was so cheap - Speed Passion LPF, its top spec gear only cant deal with 3.5 LiPo - but £95 for the speed control with all the programming gear to fine tune it
and if you go for one of their 6.5 motors too, you get a warranty that allows you to replace it for half it's retail price, regardless of how you break it - so you will only ever have to pay £35 quid after the initial purchase if things go wrong
something to think about i guess
and NO im NOT working on Commission from Schumacher lmao
