Just starting in 1/10th TC

I figured I'd start off safe and simple, until I know my limitations (Apart from "find wall; hit it"!)

A few newbie questions (I knew I should have started with RC cars fifteen years ago!)

* Are there many differences between the stock 27T motors?  (And for a Cyclone, is there a specific gearing I should go for?)
* Is there any limitation to what rubber tyres can be used?  (As it just says "rubber")
* Is there a list of what transponders can, and can't be used?
* How many cans of RedBull is normally accepted by you lot as means of bribery!

Lastly - To race (Or faff about) just at the club; does one need to still register with the BRCA?

[EDIT] Darn - I knew I'd forget something.  Is there a difference between using five or six cells?  (The Cyclone has the 6cell chassis) ?

Hi Redbull,welcome to the forums/club.

I'll answer your questions,but a good place to start would be to pop along to one of our meetings and have a chat with some of the members.

27t motors are generally aimed at entry level drivers and so there isn't a great deal to choose between them.Have you considered a 19t?
The 19t option actually produces a similar amount of performance(In reality its quicker) but with less stress on the motor.

Have you considered 'Brushless'?

You may use any brand or compound of rubber tyres that you like.Many people opt for 'Take off' 22's or 27's or Sorex .

A personal transponder is not currently a must at ours as we do have 'handout' ones that are available on sunday meetings(No charge)
But BBK and MRT both offer 'PTs' that work fine.

For 27t or 19t you have to use 6 cells or a 7.4v Lipo.

You may race at our club for 3 meetings before we require  you to join the BRCA due to insurance.But you can do it through the club and save yourself a couple of quid.

Cans of redbull are optional.

Lastly if your available this sunday we are holding a round of the STCC with 110 drivers of all standards booked in.You wouldn't be able to race  but you won't find a greater selection of cars and equipment on show for you to see what is available.We'll be there all day so pop along if you can for a while.All of our drivers will be wearing dark blue T shirts with 'CMCC' on their backs.Ask any one of us to point you in my direction.

I'm planning to do that ASAP...    Being just up the road, it's but a short hop to the track!

I only mentioned 27T motors as that, as far as I was aware, was what stock was (And where I though I'd better begin?) - I suppose Pro-Stock isn't that far apart..  I'll have a butchers at those (Reedy a good start?) - My ESC can go up to 11T.

I've gone brushless in my Micro vehicles (Blaze ST and RC18T) as well as LiPo, but thought I'd start off with the cheaper options first in my 1/10th, upgrading to a Brushless ESC and Motor once I get a little more proficient (That and a hard-case LiPo, as long as people don't run a mile!?)

I'll check for those tyres you suggest - Thanks.  [EDIT] - Found them!  Ace!!

When I come down, I'll join the BRCA through you then - Might as well.

Weather permitting, I'll try and pop down this Sunday then...  Will give me a chance to see how things work, and it'll get me out of the house for a bit!  (I'll call up father-cabs to send a "taxi" round to pick me up - Presently vehicle-less!)

Given the 'slight' price difference between the MRT and BBK transponders, is there anything that BBK does better?  (Otherwise, at nearly half-the-price, I might opt for the MRT!?)

cyclone gearing for our track is around 5.2 i think for 19twhich relates to a 72t spur and 33 pinion start there and then work your way up or down depenet on speed and heat
have you got a cyclone yet!i have many spares and cyclone cars for sale after sunday

Yep - Got a cyclone coming, and a lot of spares - But I don't think it has much in the way of hopups, so might need to get a few!?

Is the new Trinity 19T motor any good?  (And I take it, it's best to get single cells (six?) and solder them myself?

The MRT one is fine and your right,for the price,thats the one i'd choose these days.

Cells?
If you have experience of soldering then go for the six cells but i would strongly recommend getting a made-up pack if you dont.

I'm so-so at soldering, but maybe not to make an entire pack up from scratch...  Where's the best place to get a ready-made pack, as most places (I've found) just do stick packs; and not terribly good ones at that!?

Hmmm,ii take it you've got a Lipo charger for your 1/18th so why not get yourself a lipo for the TC?

Something like this would be an ideal starting place and good Value.

The LRP Quantum 2 Pro Reverse I got for the TC doesn't do LiPo (Although I supposed I could buy a cut-off), and I might as well go for LiPo if and when I go for something like the Sphere ESC.

I was mainly starting with NiMH as I wasn't sure about people's views on LiPo batteries - There's still some people in the 1/18th scene that treat them like nuclear warheads!?

Lipo's/Nimh they are all the same in the fact that if you mistreat them then expect fireworks.
As far as the club is concerned i would say that 90% of our members now run them with NO issues.Providing you have the correct charger of course.
Personally i think its a 'No-brainer'.Lipo's all the way.

I'll convert over to LiPo once I get my new electrics  (For that matter; maybe a new TC unless the Cyclone is still a good car these days?)

I take it I'd be aiming for the LRP Sphere as an ESC (Or Novak)?  And a brushless motor equivalent to a 19T

(Just looking at the cost of six cells, there's not much in it between a hard-case LiPo and the cells - I'd just need a LiPo case to hold it in the car!)

[EDIT]  Although I should be getting some NiMH batteries with the car (not sure of their quality though!) I suppose I could go LiPo off the bat - Can we still get LiPo cut-off's seperately?  (Anyone know of a shop that stocks them?)

I'm currently using Revolectrix batteries in my 1/18th [http://www.aurorra.info/aurv2/index.php] but they are the soft-case kind - Are TC's limited to the shrapnel-inducing hard cases?  (In which case I'll get a new charger - Suggestions?)

The cyclone is fine and still very competetive.
Come talk to me sunday and i'll go through some of the esc's and stuff with you.
